The distinctive black and white painted Magpie Café occupies an enviable location overlooking the harbour in this famous East Yorkshire coastal town. Originally built in 1750 as a merchant’s house its subsequent history had close maritime associations and it was first converted to an eating place c.1939. Family-run since that time, the restaurant has retained a traditional homely feel with carpeted floor, comfortable furnishings, fascinating pictures of by-gone Whitby adorning the walls, and a relaxed cosy atmosphere where everyone is welcome. A takeaway shop also adjoins the building.
Over the years the licensed café has gained widespread renown as one of the finest fish restaurants in the area. Only responsibly sourced premium quality fresh fish and seafood is used, lovingly prepared and carefully presented to your table. The impressive menu offers an extensive range of fish and seafood dishes – choose from appetising Nibbles & Snacks, Starters (Whitby crab bisque, prawn cocktail, paté, kippers, mussels, calamari, chilled seafood taster…. to mention but a few!), sharing platters and Lindisfarne Oysters. Main meals offer cod and haddock plus speciality fish and seafood such as hake, lemon sole, halibut, lobster, scampi, salmon … and much more. Dishes can be served with delicious golden chips or with choice of fresh vegetables and signature homemade sauces. Choose also from substantial salads and meat dishes (steak, lasagne, gammon, burgers etc), irresistible Desserts (too many to mention!), and scrumptious Afternoon Teas with a Yorkshire flavour.
The amazing menu also caters for dietary requirements. Much is available gluten free, simply make your server aware of your needs when ordering. Gluten free accompaniments are also provided. There is a choice of homemade vegetarian options and other allergies and intolerances may be accommodated on request. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are more than happy to answer questions regarding food preparation and ingredients and to offer advice on menu choice.
The Magpie Café is legendary as can be witnessed by the daily queues outside so it may be advisable to book ahead. Wonderful food, great service and a spectacular view make for a memorable dining experience!
