About
Located in the historic market town of Alton, The George was built shortly after the 1746 Battle of Culloden and was originally named for the victorious Duke of Cumberland. In recent times the pub has experienced mixed fortunes and closed for business in 2020 but reopened in 2021 under new management. Following refurbishment the pub is now an appealing blend of colourful contemporary decor and traditional character features including a two-sided wood-fired stove and an abundance of mellow wood. To the outside there is an attractive patio and garden area, the perfect spot to relax and enjoy good food and drink in the warmer months.
Popular with locals and visitors alike, The George offers an impressive menu including appetising Nibbles and Starters, Main Courses (steaks, burgers, lamb, chicken, fish, seafood, pasta, fish & chips plus much more), delicious Sides, and choice of irresistible Puddings. Delicious meals are created with care and beautifully presented to your table. Manager Tim Lees and his team are passionate about catering for dietary requirements and provide a 100% gluten free kitchen. Further options include vegetarian (V), vegan (VE), and dairy free (DF), all clearly marked on the menus. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are more than happy to answer questions regarding food preparation and ingredients and to advise on menu choice. A Takeaway menu is also available and Sunday Lunch at The George is not to be missed! An excellent drinks list provides something for everyone.
The George prides itself on being at the heart of the community and hosts regular live music events to which everyone is welcome to enjoy.
