Smith’s of Ongar was established in 1958 and provides fresh, sustainable seafood that is famed throughout the south east. It is a name that has become synonymous with fine dining, quality and attentive service.
Of contemporary design, the stylish and welcoming interior incorporates exposed brickwork and large windows giving a relaxed and airy feel. The elegant restaurant has subtle lighting and rich, soft décor whilst the spacious and cleverly arranged seating allows for intimate dining and conversation. There’s also a flower-filled terrace for relaxing alfresco meals on warm, sunny days. Upstairs there is a luxurious seating area with a bar where one can enjoy an aperitif and admire the striking feature wall – an illuminated glass cabinet displaying an impressive array of fine wines. The restaurant boasts an extensive menu of fresh fish that is cooked in a variety of ways to suit every palate. The mouth-watering fish dishes on offer are to be marvelled at – from whole dressed crab or deep-fried calamari with garlic mayo, to lobster thermidor, monkfish meunière, or lemon sole with tiger prawns in tarragon sauce. Plainly cooked fish is always available, and Smith’s caters for meat eaters too. There is an extensive separate gluten free menu too, comprising tempting starters, mains, and delicious desserts.Local produce is used whenever possible and food is freshly cooked to order. The seafood comes from sustainable sources and delivered fresh the same day. The master fishmongers at Smith’s then expertly prepare the fish onsite.
